79 A.E.
a tale of Doom from our Days of Extinction
by Smith

A Majestic Mountain Records Release

HEAD-BANGER REVIEWS:

"Born from the ashes of a halted film production, the unit’s eighth work stands as another undeniable triumph of an experience. Seemingly taking a page from the works of “Evil Eye” and “Second Sight” from five years ago, Clouds Taste Satanic offers up a more spacious creation than what we got last year, yet it is in every way that Clouds Taste Satanic makes it clear that their potency has not waned in the slightest despite their surprising rate of production. Having been throwing down speechless excellence for ten years now, “79 A.E.” stands as another monolithic testament to the band’s expansive power.

Two tracks both clocking over twenty-one minutes, this is the soundtrack to the post-apocalyptic wasteland where the impact of the meteors are felt in every riff, the struggle to survive is constant through the ever-present heaviness, and the pondering of the will to go on persists in the atmospheres which Clouds Taste Satanic weave into a fascinating tapestry whose details become all the more dynamic and impressive the closer you look. Clouds Taste Satanic hasn’t a need to prove themselves in any capacity for several years now, yet it is at every turn throughout “79 A.E.” that the act felt like they were well and truly out for blood. Riffs that are as thick as ever, a concept that leaves just enough to the imagination for a unique experience from one listener to the next, and a clear mastery of the craft that permeates the entire effort, how could this work have been destined for anything other than greatness.

Years of dominating at every opportunity and showing us just how adept they are in this particular corner of fantastic smoky heaviness, Clouds Taste Satanic still has yet to find an equal that can come even close to challenging their reign. Where many would’ve taken a failed project on the chin and moved on, it is with every given facet of “79 A.E” that Clouds Taste Satanic transforms it into another effortless victory."

THE SLEEPING SHAMAN:

"This new album is around forty-three minutes long, but has only two songs, Collision and Reclamation because it serves as a soundtrack to an unmade post-apocalyptic film, called 79 A.E. The deviant riff wizardry pouring out of the speakers represents a tale of doom following the Days of Extinction, where the remnants of humanity fight to survive amidst the devastating aftereffects of an asteroid strike, and all the way through the music, I can picture those images in my mind.

The music flows seamlessly and doesn’t allow you any time to get bored as you don’t know what to expect next, halfway through Reclamation is a great example of this. It’s almost like unwrapping a new flavour of chocolate bar, you don’t know what you’re going to get as there are so many textured layers spiralling across the two epic sagas. With drummer Greg Acampora being the lynchpin, it allows guitarists Scavuzzo and Brian Bauhs to express themselves and let loose with some intricate and sumptuous riffs and melodies.

They are a band who are on top form at the moment and deserve greater recognition as their music is jaw droppingly good and are top of my hit list to try and see live this year. Just sit back, listen and enjoy the magnificence that is Clouds Taste Satanic."

METAL INTEGRAL:

"With 79 AE , CLOUDS TASTE SATANIC once again achieves the feat of telling a wordless story thanks to the finesse of its compositions and the strength of its overflowing imagination."

CAVE DWELLER MUSIC:

"I am a firm believer that Clouds Taste Satanic are the best instrumental band to ever grace our collective consciousness. My love for their patented brand of music began with 2017’s The Glitter Of Infinite Hell, and here we are now, seven years and seven albums later, talking about their most impressive work to date, the two track behemoth called 79 A.E."

MEAT MEAD METAL:

"We all might be too panicked to put on music once Armageddon strikes, but if for some reason you have a clear state of mind, visiting “79 A.E.” for what would be a final time wouldn’t be a bad way to go. Clouds Taste Satanic add cosmic dreaming and hellfire storming for good measure on this record, making sure you feel the burn as you take the journey. This is a riveting, exciting record that makes you feel way better about humanity’s destruction than you may care to admit."

OUTLAWS OF THE SUN:

"79 A.E. is a first rate exercise in SONIC DELIVERY where the music feels almost too real at times and even hearing Clouds Taste Satanic having a more free-flowing attitude especially on the later stages of the album. Intricate noises and Ambient rhythms are used throughout the album which only adds to the overall excitement of the whole record. It’s great to see Clouds Taste Satanic explore new areas of music with that lush Post-Rock attitude being used to wonderful effect on Reclamation. This is an album with genuine HEART and SOUL with a powerful DESTRUCTIVE quality which gives it a more emotional feel that you don’t initially expect. 79 A.E. proves once again why Clouds Taste Satanic are without doubt one of the finest Instrumental bands from the Doom/Stoner Metal scene around today. This is another unmissable record from the band. Explore Your Own Cosmic Destruction at your own leisure. Simply unmissable."

VEIL OF SOUND:

"Clouds Taste Satanic has its unique style and take on the styles and genres, but these influences give Clouds Taste Satanic a lot of range to develop its music and invent new avenues. As they have shown on a couple of albums, not at least 2023’s Tales of Demonic Possession , the band thrives when creating long tracks and when they can develop the music over the course of twenty minutes: The delicate shifts and turns, the calmer parts that exist between the rushes of mighty riffs, the melodic themes that run through some of the tracks’ movements, and the ability to make intricate music, pushing borders and not lose the listener along the way. It is utterly engaging all through - never one dull moment. Not only is the complexity of the music making it a captive listening experience, but it also makes you want to come back to the album time after time to discover the layers, to discover the hidden gems of sound effects and the subtle changes in the musical patterns."

ARROW LORDS OF METAL:

"The music on this record is a soundtrack to a never-made post-apocalyptic film called '79 A.E.'. Heavy passages and atmospheric carpets alternate in a very colorful and fascinating way; as if you are going on a musical journey, a variety of landscapes pass you by. I can imagine that as a musician you can be completely absorbed in these flows, but this band can also convey that to an audience. As a listener you can also completely go along with that flow, immerse yourself in that landscape. The band knows how to beautifully incorporate and convey the hypnotic effect that music can have. An album with, as mentioned before, pieces to almost drown in and passages to make you jealous."

MUSIPEDIA OF METAL:

"79 A.E. is an album that when I have no idea what to listen to is always going to be my default, because every time I hear something different, and it allows me to sit back and really clear my mind with only the riffs and the doomy fuzz to consider. I can’t imagine Clouds Taste Satanic not having the instrumental album of the year and 79 A.E. being one of if not the most played album of 2024 for your reviewer. Another instrumental doom masterpiece from Clouds Taste Satanic. 9/10"

CVLT NATION:

"Excuse me as I touch the sky! Excuse me as I leave planet Earth. Excuse me as I allow the cosmic riffs of Clouds Taste Satanic to be my soundtrack to the Apocalypse! Their new album 79 A.E has altered my reality! This brain cell shifting sonic doom experience comes out on March 1st via Majestic Mountain Records. This band always delivers thrilling instrumental doom that sounds like nothing out of nothing in the musical universe. They can conjure up feedback drenched riffs that are drugs unto themselves and will get you HIGH for sure! "

FLYING FIDDLESTICKS:

"I am pleased to see these two long tracks. I am a fan of all the CTS albums, as I might have mentioned, and I have a particular affection for longform music. This new album puts me a bit more in mind of the Evil Eye (2019) / Second Sight (2019) constructions than the band’s more recent work, I mention only for comparison as last year’s Tales of Demonic Possession was also comprised of twenty-minute songs. The new record is another unique and exceptional addition to their history. Highly recommended."

GHOST CULT MAGAZINE:

"In a very literary sense, most of their previous works feel far more like reading the poem Kubla Khan. Here though, we have more than a drugged out trip down a tiny river. This album is a journey. A build up.
The fuzzed out tones are sublime to a level that defies my trademark analogies. The sonics of the record, thanks to a new engineer and studio, are leveled up. There’s just no deficiency in this album whatsoever."

LUMINOUS DASH:

"Collision and Reclamation build nicely, with a lot of variation in intensity. Sometimes fast and clumsy, sometimes almost fragile, both epic-looking pieces sound just fascinating enough to keep your attention."

KNOTFEST:

"79 A.E. by Clouds Taste Satanic is a doom metal masterpiece, blending heavy riffs with an atmospheric depth. With two tracks clocking over 20 minutes each, its slow-building, epic soundscapes are both mesmerizing and intense. A standout album for the genre."

STONER HIVE:

"The Clouds Taste Satanic cats have been showing off their skills, their knowledge and their flair since their first release To Sleep Beyond The Earth from 2014. And ever since that impressive debut release most of their songs and tones have always been in the doom territory and had this ominous or even outright evil character to it. But ever since that first album their sound has also been evolving and using ever more progressive touches. Or even classic and proto rock influences. Perhaps glaringly so on Clouds Covered or their Christmas EP from last December. But for their new 79 A.E. they have gone full prog rock and metal on our souls. There is still that doom touch, how can there not be with Clouds Taste Satanic and especially since 79 A.E. is their soundtrack for the Apocalypse. A world destroyed by an asteroid strike. But for the most part they traverse through a different landscape. The images conjured are violent, full of barren wastes, desolate hills, darkened skies and a sun still blazing above it all like a million atomic bombs. But the music does want to convey more than the saddening knowledge of an earth gone to hell. Even during that worrying and certainly doom touched opening sequence, there’s already a ray of light in the form of the echoing guitar line, a piece of brilliance that gives the listener hope that this tale of woe and despair, might in the end, after forty five minutes have a joyful conclusion. And those moments reappear throughout the two tracks, giving the listener the courage to continue. During Collision, the opening half of the album, they are limited to a few segments. Metal and their almost signature doom sound, takes precedence over everything else and heralds the impact. During the second half called Reclamation they give themselves increasingly over to the prog-rock that we mentioned before. And instead of segueing into moments of light and air like on Collision, they do it the other way around. Darker, doomier moments serrate the composition and divide these twenty minutes of impressive and progressive structuring into build ups, break downs, interludes and give it so much atmosphere and soul, it will surely make you envision mesmerizing landscapes. And I am sure you will experience this grand adventure in a different way. But the outcome remains the same. An even bigger appreciation for their skills, their knowledge and their flair and everything Clouds Taste Satanic"

DENPAFUZZ:

"Returning with its continuation of last year’s critically acclaimed Tales of Demonic Possession, ‘79 AE’ is a monumental offering from the consummate quartet that has a long and prolific history of dedicating themselves to music in the long-running, dynamic format."

DESERT PSYCHLIST:

" A mistake many instrumental outfits make is to limit themselves within the confines of a specific genre but CTS although rooted in doom avoid that trap, on both "Collision" and its follow up "Reclamation", by never allowing themselves to fall into a formula, there are always surprises to be found and left turns to negotiate on the two jams that make up this album, instances that keep the listener on his/her toes whereby a drum beat, a bass note or a guitar fill can just as easily be the signal for a dive into brutal crunchiness as it can be a sign for the band to slide into moments of lysergic ambience. The musicianship on both these jams is on another level, the guitars of Steven Scavuzzo and Brian Bauhs coil and wrap around each other in a scorching mixture of duals, trade offs and synchronizes riffage while the rhythm section of Robert Halstead (bass) and Greg Acampora (drums) are the heavy equivalent of legendary jazzers Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison (John Coltrane Quartet) able to anchor the groove when needed but also possessing the chops to hold their own when the groove gets a little wild and free which is an added bonus on the more prog-leaning "Reclamation" but comes in just as handy on the more doom orientated "Collision"."

INVISIBLE ORANGES:

"Packing two LP-side-length long-form jams, this new release sees the group indulging in their trademark brand of heaviness: loosely structured rock that runs from floaty prog rock all the way to full-on stoner metal."

PROG MAGAZINE:

"Clouds Taste Satanic have followed up last year's splendid Tales Of Demonic Possession with another languorous master class in rambling, desert-dwelling doom. 79 A.E. (Majestic Mountain) is the New Yorkers' most overtly proggy work to date, as pristine acts of Sabbath worship mutate into mesmerizing, Floyd-esque dreamscapes and organ-drenched spook rock. Self-indulgence never sounded so damn cool."

ECHOS AND DUST:

"As always, they deliver a confident and melodic blend of psych and Sabbath-worship as exploratory instrumental doom."

LA HABITACION 235:

"If there's a band that has managed to turn this slow and heavy genre that is doom into an artistic work, it's Clouds Taste Satanic. There are few more recent cases that have such a constructive vision of occupying such an expansive perspective inside different frames that they turn their long jam sessions into authentic buildings that thrive throughout their journey. The most exquisite facet of the New Yorkers as its main attractive nuance and the new "79 AE", is here as one more revulsive that knocks on the doors of its greatest originality."

THE METAL DISPATCH:

Genre: Doom Metal
Subjective rating: 4/5
Objective rating: 4/5

"Clouds Taste Satanic are already back with more long-form, mildly psychedelic, instrumental doom for you to sink your consciousness into. Like with last year’s “Tales of Demonic Possession”, this feels like passively taking part on a multidimensional journey, experiencing the wonders of passing phenomena from the safety of a stable, sheltered platform. A bit of patience is required, but you’ll be rewarded with an experience that’s soothing and stimulating at the same time."

IN YOUR EYES EZINE:

"Clouds Taste Satanic 79 A.E. is a modern post-apocalyptic manifesto of heavy and highest quality psychedelia with a smoky metal soul."
